Building your own furniture can be a fun woodworking project. When it comes to tables and larger objects, or woodturning and smaller objects I like to get fancy and use exotic woods. But when it comes to simple furniture, I like to keep it easy and use cheap woods and just have some fun.  (But of course, you could always get fancy with anything…such as a dresser built with exotic woods and has hand carved designs on the sides).

There are lots of furniture projects out there for you to make.  You might want a simple project that is small but will be practical, such as a CD holder to hang on the wall, or a small cabinet or container to store things in.

There are larger projects too, such as building a computer desk or a new table for the dining room.  Coffee tables are fun projects that can be fairly simple and make a nice centerpiece for a room too.  There are different types of dressers and desks to build.

But when most people think of “furniture” plans, they think of chairs (well, at least I do).  There are tons of different kinds of chairs, and you can find woodworking plans online for every kind of chair you can think of.

You can make a swing to hang on your porch like the picture above.  Adirondack chairs and rocking chairs are another popular furniture project that looks great on the porch, although they could be used inside too.

There are also lounge chairs, patio chairs, armchairs, folding chairs, and other kinds of chairs.  Chairs are the most common furniture woodworking projects, so there are lots of plans out there.

This is just an idea for some projects.  You can search online for woodworking plans and you can get even more ideas if you are looking for something in particular.

Another option is to check out Ted’s Woodworking website.  It has the biggest collection of woodworking plans I have ever seen, and you can find all of the projects listed here on that site.  There are about 16,000 woodworking plans on the site as well as videos and project tips too.

Making a coffee table can be fun, but since it is a bit bigger than most casual woodworking projects, it may cost a bit for all the wood depending on what kind you get.  To help the budget-minded save a little bit of money, I found a site with some free coffee table plans.

There are lots of woodworking plans online, and obviously quality will vary.  From my own experiences, free plans are not always as clear and detailed as plans you pay for.  I would much rather pay for a good set of plans, or get a book with lots of woodworking plans.

But having said that, there are always exceptions, and there are a few good plans out there.  From my research, these seem to be some of the best free plans for coffee tables:

Table 1- This is a very basic table, which is great for novice woodworkers and people on a tight budget.  Simple and clean.

Table 2- This coffee table is similar in appearance.  It is also a simple and should be cheap and easy to build.

Table 3- This is another similar table, but is a little more elegant and sturdy than the previous two.  It is a fairly simple project too, though.

Table 4- This is a strong little table.  It is sturdy and is a good project that should also be fairly easy.

Table 5- This is the best table out of these plans, but is also the most difficult.  It has shelves underneath and looks great, but you might want to wait on this if you are not an experienced woodworker.

These free plans might help you save a little bit of money on your project.  However, plans are usually the cheapest part of any project.  Tools and building materials are where the money comes in, so make sure you find plans that suit your needs.  And since some woods are cheaper than others, find some wood that looks good and suits your budget too.
